Requesting a Game from Us
We are more than happy to find ways to share these games more broadly. This type of approach does take a little more time and we’ll need some things from you to get started. This option requires more lead time for us and also requires a bit more commitment on the part of potential community partners.
Expectations from our community partners:
Make time for 2-3 meetings leading up to the event. This will help the research team connect with your community leadership team and sort through any key issues.
Promote and host the event.
Outreach – Spreading the word among your networks. We need to guaranteea minimum of 24 attendees to justify the customization for each game.
A place to host the event (an area with space for at least 4 foldable style tables. We need tables that are at least 6’ x 3’ for a team of 6 people)
A list of 6-10 issues that could complicate an evacuation for your community. For example, a local football game might increase traffic or construction on a local road. These will be used to create the chance cards.
A list of 5-10 behaviors that the organization would like to see in their community. For example, home hardening, checking on neighbors, signing up for alerts, etc.
Review prior games and eliminate elements that aren’t appropriate for your community. (about 15 minutes of work)
Choose the area of the map. The gameboard is a map of the local region. We’ll need a region that will make up the gameboard. There’s a sweet spot where it needs to be detailed enough to allow players to see streets in their local neighborhood, but not so zoomed in that we can’t address more regional issues. (I can share examples.)
Select a date for the event. A window (+/- 2 weeks) when the game would ideally be hosted. I would need to know when you plan the event so I can be sure I’d have time to create all the materials.
Give permission to use the findings from the game in academic research. All of this will follow university guidelines related to research protocols (confidentiality, etc).
The research team would then:
1. Design and create the game (tailored to your community)
2. Provide all materials relative to the game
3. Facilitate the game (during the community workshop)
